Graeme Jones said that Fulham against Luton is not a level playing field because of the disparity in budgets between the two teams with £22million striker Aleksander Mitrovic hitting a hat-trick to beat Town 3-2.
The Hatters were outclassed in the first half, but scored twice in the second period and should’ve had more, with Harry Cornick wasting a golden opportunity early in the second period, with the score at 1-0.
And though Dan Potts’s header gave them some hope at 2-1, Mitrovic scored soon after when Town were on top.
“The players need to know that’s our DNA now. I think we were joint fifth top goalscorers coming into the game tonight and that’s Luton Town,” said Jones.
“With the greatest respect, the budgets tonight, you have to speak about. It’s not a level playing field, so for us to achieve that at Fulham is good, but we want to win football matches. That’s what we’re here for.
“There’s another level again, that we need to go to. We need to be killers, we need to be ruthless and do whatever it takes to win the game.
“We are getting there but it’s just frustrating that we’ve taken a bit of a step backwards tonight.
“The players are upset that they didn’t get something out of the game and rightly so, that’s what we’re here for. I don’t want to say, ‘well played, unlucky, we got beaten 3-2’. No. We’re here to get something from the game.
“Never get beat. Never, on a football pitch, never. They have to have that attitude, I’ve told them that after the game.
“I’m not having a go at them, I’m just talking about the last little bit of progression. They boys have got it in them so we’ll keep working.”
