Graeme Jones was happy to get his first win as Luton manager and just as happy to be drawn away to Cardiff in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
A 3-1 win against Ipswich ensured Town were in the hat and they were pitted against the team that beat them with a last-gasp winner on Saturday in the Championship.
Asked what he thought of another trip to the Welsh capital, Jones said: “Delighted. Absolutely delighted. We had a post-match meeting yesterday and it took me five hours to go through it on Saturday and Sunday and the boys know what we need to improve at in the next game.
“So we’ve got to measure that improvement. I’m really, really happy with that fixture.”
Against Ipswich, Jones’ made 11 changes to the side that lost at Cardiff on Saturday in the Championship, handing debuts to transfer deadline day loan signings Izzy Brown and Luke Bolton, with both impressing among a host of good performances.
Jones said: “I think the style was clear for everyone to see. I think it’s the first time we’ve had a real mixture of players and some players that are physically capable on the pitch. That was the team I saw last season and was the secret of their success.
“Nobody talks about how I’ve had to replace two full backs at this club who are Premier League players now. That’s not been easy but, overall, I was really satisfied, certainly with the first 45 minutes tonight.
“In the second 45 we had a few forced changes to make. I don’t think we were as fluent. I wanted to really go for the throat and and take the the game out of sight. We didn’t. We gave a stupid goal away, which was disappointing but, overall, it’s a first win of the season, it was positive. I’m happy really.
“We’ve been competitive in the first two games and a first win tonight. Just, obviously, take a minute out of the game at the weekend and we’re sitting here a lot happier.”
