Nathan Jones has confirmed that Luton are in the market for a starting central midfielder before the transfer window shuts and hopes that one becomes more affordable as the deadline approaches on Tuesday.
The Hatters find themselves light in midfield at the moment with injuries to Jordan Clark and Luke Berry, while Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s exceptional loan spell from Leicester only lasted a season and Joe Morrell and Ryan Tunnicliffe have both left for Portsmouth.
With just five days left of the transfer window, boss Jones said of the central midfield berth: “That is the position we’re trying to find. Without giving away too many secrets, we know we are slightly lighter in midfielder.
“Berry has been injured but we made calculated decisions with Morrell, Tunni was slightly different.
“We know we have lost a number of midfield players but what we want to do is bring in someone who is either different or going to be a starter. I don’t want to bring a number in because we have enough numbers that can cope.”
Luton favour permanent signings, rather than loan players, despite the success of Dewsbury-Hall last term, but asked what he favours in a new midfield recruit this time around, Jones said: “Depends. We have a recruitment meeting today as we do every Thursday, we will see what becomes available.
“We have purposely kept a position there, so if someone becomes available, we are able to act on it. That is what we have done. Without being totally disrespectful, we might not be able to afford something in the beginning of June/July, but that might change come 5pm on Tuesday.”
