Graeme Jones was left frustrated with the fourth official in Luton’s 4-0 FA Cup third round exit at Bournemouth after he could not make a substitution and had to watch as Callum Wilson immediately scored a killer second goal.
Town had conceded early to a Philip Billing volley but had weathered a Cherries storm included a Dominic Solanke goal chalked off by VAR.
The Video Assistant Referee then confirmed a spot-kick for Luton, but Sheehan missed after Harry Cornick missed another one-on-one.
But Town more than competed until the 67th minute when England international Callum Wilson scored with his first touch after being introduced off the bench.
Jones had been trying to make his own substitutions moments prior, but could not.
Asked if he wanted to bring on Luke Bolton and Luke Berry before the goal, Jones said: “That was the plan, I don’t know what we’ve done. We’ve lost Kazenga (LuaLua) in the warm up, we tried to bring Luke Bolton on at 2-1 on New Year’s Day (against Millwall), they score again. It’s been really frustrating.
“We wanted to get the players on the pitch (against Bournemouth), the fourth official for some reason didn’t allow that to take place, I could see energy levels dropping, they go 2-0 up and it’s game over.”
