Luton manager Nathan Jones is looking forward his first return to Stoke in front of fans tonight – far more than when he was Potters boss.
The Welshman was sacked by City in November 2019 after just nine months in charge and six wins in 38 games.
Jones controversially left Luton for Stoke in January 2019, but returned to the Hatters in May 2020 to orchestrate the Great Escape.
With Luton now an established Championship side, four points ahead of City and and pushing for a play-off spot, much water has passed under the bridge since Jones’ spell in Stoke, with the manager now restored as a Town hero.
But he’s yet to return to the dugouts at the Bet365 Stadium when fans are there, due to the Covid shutout of supporters last term.
He said: “I’m looking forward to it, I really am. Hopefully we can put in a better performance than we did last year.
“I’m looking forward to it more, going there as an away manager, than I did as a home manager, which is kind of ironic.”
He added: “I know them well, don’t worry about that. It’s another tough game. We’ve got an extra day to prepare because it’s a Wednesday, but it’s a tough game.”
Town lost 3-0 in Stoke last term and in his three meetings against his former side, Luton have yet to score, shipping six goals.
And that was the same scoreline that Luton suffered in their last away day, when they capitulated at Birmingham.
Jones said: “Birmingham are in the lower echelons of the league, but we were totally inept. So, we’ve got to make sure that our performance levels are better than they were at Birmingham.”
Luton did address that performance at home to West Brom on Saturday, when the beat the Baggies 2-0 to leapfrog Albion in the Championship after reignite their play-off hopes, but they haven’t beaten Stoke in 11 attempts, since their last win in 2000.
