Luton Town’s Championship survival will require a minimum of 20 points from their final 20 games, according to manager Graeme Jones.
The Hatters dropped to the foot of the table yesterday after a 3-1 defeat at Millwall and victories elsewhere for Wigan Athletic.
Luton are now three points from safety, though it is effectively four points due to their vastly inferior goal difference of -24, 15 goals worse off than Stoke in 21st place.
In the last four out of five seasons, between 40 and 41 points has been enough to survive, so that’s the target for Town.
Jones said: “We’ve got 20 games left to get a minimum of 20 points, that’s where we are and as a football club we’ve got to stick together and try to achieve it together as I won’t have blame, certainly in that dressing room.”
After an ninth straight away-day defeat yesterday, Jones was asked if he thought his team could see themselves to survival, and he said: “I do, if we’re playing one game a week and I’ve got everybody fit, we can get results, I’ve got no question about that.
“I think we’ve got a period of four or five weeks now, that you play one game a week, but I need everybody fit, you need your best players to compete in this league.”
Jones will now look to the transfer window to try to bolster his squad for the run-in, which includes 11 games at home.
He said: “We need to get a couple of players in, we need to re-energise the club, re-energise the players, freshen it up and get ready to get a minimum of 20 points from the next 20 games, that’s where we are.”
