Jordan Clark has exceeded Nathan Jones’ expectations and the manager says he’s amazed he’d never played higher than League One in his career before joining Luton.
Signed in the summer after he left Accrington Stanley, the versatile player is currently impressing as a right back and has starred in Town’s back-to-back victories over Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest.
And though Clark was recruited as a right winger, his the manager believes he’s also an accomplished central midfielder – even if the 27-year-old doesn’t think agree.
“If he wasn’t vertically challenged, I think the boy could play in goal,” joked Jones, adding: “There’s nothing he can’t do. I think he’s a real good central midfield player. He doesn’t, but I do.
“So, he could end up there. His mobility, his understanding, his intelligence is of a very, very high level.
“It’s baffling to me how the boy’s never played higher than League One before in his career because, for me, he’s been a revelation.
“The thing about it, is his humility, the energy, the work-rate and just the understanding that he shows on a daily basis, far exceeds the career he’s had, without being disrespectful.
“I’ve worked with players that have played in the Premier League that have not got the ability of the understanding of Jordan Clark.
Such is Clark’s ability to operate in a variety of positions, that he’s been tagged as a utility player, but Jones insists he’s much more than that.
“Jordan Clark was brought here as an out and out right winger, but he’s shown us that he’s far, far more than that,” said Jones.
“I didn’t anticipate playing Jordan Clark at right back and I didn’t anticipate him being a wonderful central midfield player, he’s just shown us that since he’s come here.
“I wouldn’t class him as a utility player, I would just class him as a really wonderful footballer.
