Graeme Jones believes stronger home form and the experience of playing every team in the Championship will stand his Luton side in good stead to engineer a great escape.

The Hatters currently sit bottom of the division, four points adrift but with the worst goal difference in the league, having conceded 56 times in 26 games.

Jones has targeted a minimum of 20 points to avoid relegation and with 33 points available from the 11 games remaining games on home soil, starting today with the visit of Birmingham City, he understands why fans see the remaining Kenilworth Road clashes as crucial in achieving that target.

“I see them as really important but that doesn’t mean to say we’re going to neglect the away performances,” he said, adding: “I need to assess and approach the away form next week, because we’re at home this week.

“Our home form, we’ve taken seven positive results from 12 games. I can think of Leeds, West Brom and Swansea where we were really competitive, so we’re talking about ten competitive performances out of 12. Hull and Forest, I’m not accepting.

“So, we’ve been strong at home. We are now more experienced for the teams that are going to come here. With the greatest of respect to everybody who’s going to come down, they’ll be difficult games, but there’s nobody I fear.

“We’ve played Fulham, West Brom and Leeds at home. So, the home form and the home opportunities are exactly that, starting from tomorrow, we’ll approach the game that way.

“When we move on to Nottingham Forest next week, I think we’ll have to have a completely different look at it.”

Luton lost 2-1 to a controversial late Lukas Jutkiewicz winner at St Andrews, the last time they faced Birmingham.

The Blues are six league games without a win but Jones said: “They are exactly what we’ve seen in October. They can change it, 4-4-2, they’re robust, Jutkiewicz is a handful, (they’re) competitive, (they) press, blah, blah, blah.

“I think they are a good Championship team. They are a very, very competitive Championship team and we’re 26 games in, we all know nothing is going to be easy.

“Every game is assessed on its own merits. Every game has a different challenge. You’ve seen the difference between Fulham and Millwall, you’ll see the difference between Birmingham and we need to be adaptable to be ready.”
