Goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski has left Luton Town to join Charlton Athletic in a permanent move for an undisclosed fee, with manager Matt Bloomfield praising the Belgian for playing for the Hatters just days after the death of his father last season.
The 32-year-old arrived at Kenilworth Road from Blackburn Rovers shortly before the start of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, but has suffered back-to-back relegations with Town.
After the death of his father, Jacek, he returned to play just three days later in a vital 1-0 win over Coventry in Luton’s Championship relegation run-in — having travelled back from Belgium with Bloomfield. That same week, he was named the club’s Diamond Player of the Season for 2024/25.
Reflecting on the emotional period, Bloomfield told the club’s website: “Thomas is someone who I will always have the greatest respect for what he did for us at the end of last season, playing so soon after his father’s passing. I only want the best for Thomas and his family. He gave us everything in every game he played for us, and I will always watch his future career with real interest.”
Kaminski has penned a three-year deal with the Addicks and will now join former Luton boss Nathan Jones as he plots Charlton’s first season back in the Championship, following their play-off final promotion.
Jones told Charlton’s website: “I’m very pleased because it’s a wonderful signing. Thomas was outstanding for Luton in the Premier League and he was outstanding last season in the Championship as well. For me, he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the division. We wanted to strengthen on all levels and improve every department, and we feel that the signing of Thomas does that.”
It ends a 85-game two-year stay with the Hatters where he earned plaudits for a string of outstanding performances between the Premier League posts in his debut campaign for the club. His most iconic moment came during a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, when a stunning double save earned him the Save of the Month award for November 2023. That same stop later won the Premier League’s Save of the Season.
In his first interview with the south London side, Kaminski said: “I’m really excited to join the club. When I first spoke to the gaffer he came across very, very determined and very passionate about what we wants to do and what he’s going to do. That was a big, big motivating factor for me to come to Charlton.”
While Luton have lost their number one goalkeeper, the extension of Jack Walton’s contract may soften the blow as, after his successful two-year loan spell at Dundee United, has was expected to see him challenge for the goalkeeper’s jersey.
