Jack Wilshere has described Liam Walsh as exactly the type of player and person Luton Town need as the Hatters continue building for next season, after the midfielder penned a new deal.
With his old deal set to expire next month, the Liverpudlian becomes the latest senior player to commit his future to the club following Jordan Clark’s recent renewal earlier this week.
Walsh started 30 of Wilshere’s 43 matches in charge and the manager made it clear securing his signature was an important part of his summer plans.
“Walshy knew my thoughts on him and his contract early on,” Wilshere told LTFC+, adding: “But what I love about him is that he just loves the game and didn’t want to focus on that. He just wanted to carry on playing, and playing well.”
The former Arsenal and England midfielder believes players such as Walsh and Clark are central to the culture he is trying to create at Kenilworth Road.
“He was in the team and a very important player for us last season,” the Hatters boss said, adding: “I made it clear to everyone that how we move forward is by signing players like Jordan Clark, like Liam Walsh, who understand exactly what I want, can execute it, but can also have a big influence on the group.”
Wilshere also praised Walsh’s character after what he described as a difficult period away from football, as he and his footballer partner Missy Bo Kearns suffered a miscarriage earlier this year.
“Also with Walshy, what he had to go through was a big thing. It’s always the person before the player, and he dealt with that so well,” said Wilshere.
“It was difficult for him and his girlfriend, but he wanted to come back and help the team, so that told me he’s not just the type of player, but the type of person that we also want at the club.”
While Walsh’s qualities on the pitch have been clear throughout his first two seasons with the Hatters, Wilshere believes his influence behind the scenes is just as important.
“He leads by example and we all know what he can do on the pitch, but off the pitch is just as important. We love him; not just me, all the coaches, and it’s so important.
“That’s what we are trying to create here. We all felt from day one that everyone has been fully in and committed to what we want, none more than Walshy.”
With Clark and Walsh now tied down to fresh deals, it’s just striker Elijah Adebayo that the club said they were in negotiation with, when they released their retained list after the end of the season. But with the opening of the transfer window still 10 days away, Wilshere has already made big strides in securing two of the most influential figures in the dressing room as he looks to turn last season’s late revival into a promotion challenge in 2026/27.
