Last term’s survival tally won’t cut it this year, insists Bradley as Town bid to beat the drop

Sonny Bradley knows Luton will have accrue more points than the Millwall team that survived relegation in last season’s Championship as they’ve already got a better tally that the bottom two from last term.

The Hatters are second from bottom on 35 points, with nine games left to play as they aim to close the six point gap to Hull City, who are currently safe in 21st place.

In the 2018/19 campaign, Ipswich, Bolton and Rotherham got relegated with 31, 32 and 40 points, respectively. Millwall finished just above the drop zone on 44, though they could have done so with the same amount of points as the Millers, due to their superior goal difference.

Hatters boss Graeme Jones said back in January, when his men were bottom of the league on 21 points, that they would need a minimum of 20 points from their final 20 games in order to survive in the Championship.

But Bradley believes that target has increased, saying: “I look back at last season’s table and if you got 41 points last season, you stay in the division. This season it’s clearly going to be a lot more than that. There’s nine games left, let’s pick up as many points as we can and let’s stay up.”

With late game-saving moments in each of their last two games, Town are showing some resilience at both ends of the field. A James Collins penalty against Stoke rescued a point, while a Simon Sluga save on Saturday at Wigan saved a point.

Bradley said: “It’s a point closer to staying up. How many points we’re going to need? I’m not sure yet.”

Luton have the worst goal difference in the division, with -28, but are in good form with just one defeat in their last six outings and the captain, who has had three consecutive clean sheets in his last three games, said: “We’ve got to focus on ourselves. I know it’s a bit of a boring answer but it’s true.

“We’ve got to focus on Preston now. There’s still nine games left and if we win the majority of our games we will stay up in the division, there’s no two ways about it.”
