Nathan Jones has urged Luton fans not to get carried away too early about the prospect of the play-offs, but believes the 1-0 victory against Swansea has secured Town’s Championship status.
Harry Cornick came off the bench to bag his first goal in three months to see of the Jacks on their own patch last night.
The manager jumped in with the travelling Hatters faithful at the Liberty Stadium after the final whistle in celebration of an away day that he viewed as “utter perfection”.
The victory boost Town’s campaign tally to 42 points and lifted Luton to within three points of the top six and with a game in hand on West Brom.
But, while supporters are dreaming of the play-offs, Jones hailed a major milestone reached.
“We’ve just got to keep getting points. Realistically, let’s not get carried away too early. The first thing we have to do is make sure we secure our status in this league.
“That’s what we have to do with resource, competing with others.
“Once we do that, then see where we can go. I don’t think you’re going down on 42 points, but that’s our first thing achieved, really.
“Now, there’s 18 games to go, 18 massive games where if we keep consistency, keeping winning and try to get as many points as we can, and see where it takes us.”
Since a Christmas break due to Covid outbreaks in the club and across others in the division, Luton have taken 13 points from a possible 18. It’s that form, which has left fans daring to dream.
Jones said: “We are very close to the play-offs. Three points, a game in hand. We had four games called off – Reading, Bristol City, Swansea and Coventry. Well, we’ve won three of those.
“We’ve come back from the break in real good (form).”
