Kazenga LuaLua believes Luton’s performance against Fulham is the benchmark for Championship survival.
Town were agonisingly close to a memorable Boxing Day victory, but Bobby Decordova-Reid struck in the 94th minute to turn three points into just one.
Significantly it meant the Hatters slipped into the bottom three after Stoke staged an injury time comeback to beat Sheffield Wednesday and leapfrog Luton on goal difference.
LuaLua, who scored the opener in the six-goal thriller, said: “I’ve played in the Championship all my life, so I know how tough it is. It’s going to be a challenge, but we have a very good squad. We can cope in the Championship, I don’t see why not.
“We just need to take our chance when we have it. It’s a long season and we’re halfway now, so with a performance like this (against Fulham) I don’t see why we can’t stay in this league, but we’ve got to do it, rather than talk.
“We need to keep playing like that every game. It’s not going to be easy to get a result, but the way we played I think we have a chance to stay up. I don’t see why not because we’re doing well. It’s difficult at the moment, but I’m sure we’ll get there.”
There’s now a four-point gap between Luton and 20th placed Huddersfield, and it would take two victories to join Middlesbrough in 19th, providing Boro lost twice.
“It’s a tough league. I’m sure from 14th or 15th place it’s tight in there,” said LuaLua, with QPR on 32 points and Reading on 29.
“It’s too early. I think we have good players. I don’t see why we can’t get a result, we have good players, so I think the results will come. It’s just one little thing that is missing at the moment, but we will be fine, I’m sure.”
