Luton loanee Luke Bolton says it’s an honour to be called up to the England Under-20 side, even if it’s in a position he no longer sees as his future.

The 19-year-old, who has been a winger, has played the last two Championship games at right back for Luton after joining on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

And he’s been deployed at the back on the advice of Citizens boss Pep Guardiola, so he’s in the process of learning the role at club level.

However, Bolton has been called into Keith Downing’s Young Lions squad as a forward,

“It’s always an honour to play for your country, no matter what level so I’m buzzing to meet up with the lads,” he said.

“I was thinking, ‘oh no, they’ve got me down as a forward’. Hopefully, I’ll speak to the manager and see what he says. If I have to play on the wing, I’ll play on the wing, but I’d rather keep playing right back, drilling my position.”

Bolton has earned caps in various England youth age groups and he was part of the Under-20 mixed-age squad that won the Toulon tournament in 2018,

This, he says, is his first official call-up to the U20s and he’ll be hoping to earn a cap in the fixtures against Holland and Switzerland.

He thinks his introduction to life in the Championship will stand him in good stead, compared to his spell in League One last term with Wycombe Wanderers.

“I prefer it (the Championship),” Jones said, adding: “(There are) a lot less long balls. When the long ball is needed it goes, which isn’t a problem, but League One is a bit direct. I played as a winger, so I wasn’t getting much of the ball.

“So, I’m really enjoying playing in the Championship, top league.

“It’s a bit different but it doesn’t matter to me, I like to think I’m humble guy and I’ll play wherever I need to play. I never took things for granted at City, so it’s never a shock coming to a smaller club.

“(There’s a) great training facility, great stadium (at Luton) and the pitch is in great condition at the moment, hopefully we can keep that all season.

“I do feel at home, all the lads are great and welcomed me in the group and I work hard, as a lad, anyway.”
