Izzy Brown’s first Hatters goal topped a star performance to claim a deserved victory over Charlton and end a five-game losing streak that lifted Luton out of the Championship relegation zone.

They’d only been in the bottom three for 24 hours after Middlesbrough claimed a point last night and, but for a shaky few minutes after gifting the Addicks a seventh minute opener, they were the better side.

Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu, who ran Brown close for man-of-the-match, netted another one of his self-proclaimed ‘bangers’ to level the contest, though referee Darren England consulted with his assistant after the Londoners protested that James Collins was in an offside position.

Once the official confirmed the goal, Town took charge.

They were a lick of paint away from edging in front but Andrew Shinnie’s sublime curler cannoned off the post after James Collins had earlier hit the bar with a looping effort.

But the winner came in the 53rd minute when Brown somehow collected Shinnie’s pass, managing to flick the ball beneath visiting keeper Dillon Phillips.

There was a golden opportunity to put the result beyond doubt when the goalscorer picked out Harry Cornick with an exquisite through-ball. The forward had the time to take a steadying touch but he blasted first time and aimed wide.

Despite their dominance, the last minute defeat on Saturday, plus that losing, there was a slight nervousness around the the ground.

Charlton came close to a stunning equaliser but Conor Gallagher’s 25 yard rasp rattled the upright, but the hosts saw out the game to claim the spoils.
