Rob Edwards was left disappointed after his Luton side gifted West Bromwich Albion goals as the Baggies turned around Town’s early two-goal lead to win 3-2.
The hosts had blitzed the visitors with two stunning goals in four minutes early on, as Carlton Morris blasted in from 30 yards and then Elijah Adebayo doubled the advantage on 11 minutes with a bullet header.
But the Hatters were soon dominated by a West Brom side that had won eight Championship games in nine and, despite their lead, they rode their luck, with Daryl Dike heading against the bar from close range.
But the American then gave the visitors hope by halving the lead just before the break, tackling countryman Ethan Horvath – who’d saved well from Jed Wallace and Dara O’Shea – after the keeper had raced off his line to clear a through-ball.
And there was more egg on the face of the goalie on 65 minutes when he fumbled a cross which led to panic in the Hatters penalty box. He initially made a recovery save but Jayson Molumby thumped in through congestion area to level.
And anything Town could do the Baggies could do better as they scored again two minutes later when an unmarked Conor Townsend tapped into an empty net after Matt Phillips’ fine cross.
But with 23 minutes of regular time still to play, Luton couldn’t find an answer.
Edwards said: (I’m) bitterly disappointed to lose the game, I’ll start with credit where credit’s due, West Brom are a really good team, and well done to them.
“I was delighted with our start, to go 2-0 up was well-deserved and exactly how we want to try and be, aggressive and on the front foot, playing forward, thinking forward, couple of really good goals.
“They still retained that threat, they had a couple of chances as well in those opening exchanges, it probably then shifts that mindset a little bit of, OK, we’re 2-0 up now, good.
“They probably shift their mindset a little bit now into we’ve got to up this, and they just made the shape of their team when they had the ball was difficult for us to press at times and we had to try and change it a little bit in that first half which we did and then we were OK.
“But, ultimately, it was the manner of the goals, it was the way we conceded the goals, that as the disappointing thing.
“Yes, they created chances, but the goals we conceded were from our mistakes and that’s what we’ve been really good at, defending the box, block, stopping crosses, clearances, we’ve one that really well this season and today we got punished when we made some of those errors.”
Town were in dreamland after 11 minutes, particularly with the quality of their goals, but they never pressed their advantage against arguably the best side that have visited Kenilworth Road this term.
Edwards said: “It was a long way to go, it’s great to go 2-0 up at any stage, I know what you’re saying, there’s a long way back for them as well, and I think at 2-1 at half time, the game, they can gain a little bit of confidence from that.
“We started the second half probably on the back foot, but then we grew into it a little bit again, then the goals change games, changes people’s perceptions, change the mindset and the second one deflates us.
“They’re really on the front foot and we can definitely, definitely defend better in those moments.”
