Luton saw victory snatched from them at the death as Bobby Decordova-Reid struck deep into injury time of a frantic Boxing Day bonanza.
Three times they took the lead against Fulham, twice after forcing mistakes in the visitors’ penalty area, but on every occasion the Cottagers managed to claw their way back.
Kazenga LuaLua opened the scoring in the fifth minute after a high-press reaped dividends for the winger, back in the side as one of three changes.
However, Fulham levelled within four minutes as Decordova-Reid was left unattended to head home.
But Town battled back and James Collins edged them ahead just before the half hour mark, smashing in at close quarters from a corner.
Simon Sluga was excellent in Town’s goal and made a string of fine saves, including three in reasonably quick succession, where he raced off his line to sweep away from Ivan Cavaleiro, and acrobatically threw himself at shots from Joe Bryan and Tom Cairney.
After the interval, the Londoners pressed and finally their pressure paid off, albeit rather too easily as for as Luton are concerned when Mitrovic headed in from a corner.
And just when they looked to have the game by the scruff of the neck, Harry Cornick came off the bench to stroke in after Luke Berry forced another penalty box mistake.
The forward should’ve doubled his tally and made the result secure soon after when he beat last-man Tim Ream to race towards goal, only to fire wide.
It was a miss that would prove pivotal as Fulham pressed and, in the fourth minute of five inexplicably added on, for a game the saw no cards – a feat that was in itself befuddling, considering how often LuaLua was kicked – substitute Aboubakar Kamara headed, Sluga blocked at point blank range, only to see Decordova pounce and thump in the rebound.
It was a result that dropped the Hatters. into the Championship relegation zone as, elsewhere, a late, late goal for Stoke City against Sheffield Wednesday saw them leapfrog Luton on goal difference.
