Luton ace had been playing with pain for a month as broken foot revealed

Reuell Walters’ broken foot could have been sustained as early as the September international break, with Luton boss Rob Edwards saying the teenager had been playing with pain.

The right back is one of three players that sent back from this month’s international duty with injuries, along with Teden Mengi (calf) and Mark McGuinness (ankle).

The latter is the only one of the three with a chance of facing Watford in tomorrow’s local derby at Kenilworth Road, with Mengi expected to be out for another fortnight.

But Walters, who was signed from Arsenal in the summer, now faces months on the sidelines.

“Reuell had to pull out (of England Under-20s) because after the Sheffield United game he was in a lot of pain, and unfortunately, he’s broken his foot, so he’s going to be out for a significant amount of time,” said Edwards.

“We don’t fully know when, it happened. He’d been experiencing a bit of pain even as far back as the last international break. But, upon scanning it, it was swollen and sore after the game. Credit to him for battling through as long as he did. It showed the break.

“He’s been great. He puts a brave face on, but it’s obviously really disappointing for him and for us,” said Edwards.

“He’s made a really good start to life here at Luton. For a young player in difficult circumstances in the first few months of the season, he’s been really, really good.

“So yeah, (it’s) difficult, but he’s put a brave face on and he’s been really positive.”
