Holidaymakers heading abroad this summer are being urged to think twice before ditching their inflatables, as Luton Airport launches a new scheme to tackle plastic waste.
Research commissioned by the airport found that inflatables are among the most abandoned holiday items, with many lasting less than a week before being left behind. From classic lilos to unicorn floats and flamingo rings, more than half of travellers buy a new inflatable each year, yet over a third admit they only use them once.
In total, more than 54 million inflatables are estimated to be abandoned on holidays annually – enough to stretch around the world twice.
To encourage a more sustainable approach, the airport has introduced the ‘LLA Lilo Exchange’, offering travellers free, pre-loved inflatables before they fly. Returning passengers can also drop off used items at the airport when they land, and in return will receive a free Fast Track security pass for their next trip.
Clare Armstrong, head of guest experience at LLA, said: “We’re thrilled to launch London Luton Airport’s ‘LLA Lilo Exchange’ this summer – a fun and environmentally responsible way to highlight our simple and friendly passenger experience.
“As we all know, inflatables are one of the most loved holiday staples to travel with and, contrary to the belief of nearly half (45 per cent) of passengers, deflated inflatables are allowed through airport security. Our Lilo Exchange aims to provide a fun way to encourage people to travel more responsibly by bringing back unwanted inflatables, so that other holidaymakers jetting off from LLA can do the same.”
The scheme forms part of the airport’s summer ‘LLA Resort’ campaign, which also includes competitions, retail offers and giveaways for departing passengers.
Top destinations for Luton travellers this summer include Palma de Mallorca, Faro and Malaga, with 2.5 million people expected to fly from the airport.
The airport also revealed the most commonly abandoned holiday items, with sandals, sunglasses and beach towels topping the list. Inflatables ranked seventh, with 12 per cent of holidaymakers admitting they leave them behind.
To mark Jet2’s first summer of flights from Luton, the airline is also offering passengers the chance to win a seven-night holiday for four at a four-star resort in Madeira.
