Luton Town manager Rob Edwards has expressed his excitement at securing the services of Congo international Christ Makosso, the club’s first signing of the January transfer window.

The highly rated 20-year-old centre-back joins the Hatters from Belgian second-tier side RWD Molenbeek for an undisclosed fee, pending international clearance.

The young defender’s arrival is an early statement of intent as Luton look to strengthen their squad in the transfer window, but while Makosso will officially arrive at Kenilworth Road tomorrow (January 1), the Congo international will not be available for the visit of Norwich City.

However, Edwards praised the defender’s potential, telling the club’s website: “Christ is a young and really athletic defender who has caught the eye of the recruitment team, and we all think he’s got a really big future ahead of him.

“We’ll need some patience as he continues his development, but he’s an exciting young player who fits into the way we want to play going forward. We’re really looking forward to working with him.”

Makosso’s career trajectory has been impressive. Spotted in Congo, he moved to France’s Sochaux in 2023, making his professional debut in Ligue 2 during the 2022/23 season. His performances earned him a move to Belgium last January, where he continued to develop. On the international stage, Makosso debuted for Congo in November 2023 and has become a regular, featuring most recently in an African Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa.

Speaking about his move to the Championship club, Makosso said: “I’m really excited to be joining Luton. I’ve seen so many positive stories about the club and the amazing fans. I can’t wait to meet my new team-mates and get working with them and the coaches. Everyone has made me feel welcome and I’m looking forward to being at Kenilworth Road for the first time to watch us tomorrow.”
