Luton will wait until the last minute to make a decision on the fitness of Jordan Clark as they travel to face Portsmouth in the Championship tomorrow.
The midfielder missed out on Monday night’s league opening 4-1 defeat to Burnley with a “neural” issue with his hamstring.
That saw academy product Zack Nelson handed his full competitive debut, alongside new signing Shandon Baptiste in the centre of the park.
It was a baptism of fire for both of them as the Clarets were in charge from the sixth minute in a hugely disappointing display and result from the Hatters.
They will look to bounce back at Fratton Park tomorrow lunchtime, but it won’t be an easy game as it will be Pompey’s first home game back in the Championship for 12 years after they won the League One title last term.
So, injury-hit Luton will need all the reinforcements they can manage, and Edwards said: “Clicker’s all right. He didn’t train yesterday. Obviously a very light session today, so we’ll give him as long as possible to see where he’s at.
“It was more neural pain down the back of his leg. Hamstring. We scanned things and there were one or two things that showed up, signalling (something), but we feel that it’s a days thing rather than anything more sinister that’s going to take longer.
“We’ll see if he’s all right. He had some light training today, so that was a plus.”
Clark is the only likely returnee for the Portsmouth clash, despite centre half Amari’i Bell appearing on the bench on Monday night.
Edwards said of the Jamaican international: “(He’s) getting closer. The intention was not to have him coming on, it was a bit too soon, but with so many young players playing we wanted a senior body around the dressing room.
“He’s doing well. He’s a few days better off than Monday. He’s getting into territory now where he’s becoming more and more of an option.
“Again, what we don’t want to do is push things too soon. He’s been training for the right amount of time now to start to be considered.”
And while they won’t play this weekend, trio of injured Hatters, Mads Andersen, Reece Burke and Marvelous Nakamba, are making good progress on the path to a first-team return.
“They’re progressing well,” said Edwards, adding: “They’re probably a couple of weeks away, but we had Mads and Burkey training today, which were real positives as well.
“Mark did the first little bit as well, so it was nice for everyone to see some decent numbers out there in the warm-up.”
