Arriva employees in Luton have won a new pay deal that averts a series of strikes planned for this autumn.

The agreement follows weeks of tension after Luton bus drivers voted to stage 16 days of walkouts in a dispute over wages earlier this month.

Unite the union confirmed its members, including drivers, engineers, cleaners and shunters, will receive a pay rise of up to 5.8 per cent depending on their role.

The settlement means bus services in and around Luton will continue without the disruption that had been feared by passengers.

The dispute covered workers at Arriva the Shires depots in three counties, including in Luton, but planned strikes throughout September and October have now been cancelled.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This shows the strength of workers and the power of the union movement. Unite is the winning trade union and is putting more money into the pockets of our members.”

Regional officer Jeff Hodge added: “Our members were prepared to take strike action in their fight for better pay and their determination has seen them win a new and improved pay deal. They should be congratulated for standing together and getting a well-earned pay award.”
