Luton are close to completing a deal for Cardiff City’s Mark McGuinness, with the defender expected to have a medical.
The former Arsenal centre half has been a top summer transfer target and the Bluebirds had reportedly slapped a £10million price tag on the 23-year-old.
However, it is understood that the Hatters will lure him to Kenilworth Road for less than that, with an initial fee that could still make him the club’s record signing.
McGuinness was left out of the Cardiff’s squad at the weekend, due to the potential transfer, as the Welsh side were hammered 5-0 by Burnley.
McGuinness has made 86 appearances, scoring six goals for Cardiff since his switch from Arsenal in 2021.
Town boss Rob Edwards would not be drawn on the speculation around McGuinness during his pre-match Portsmouth press conference on Friday.
But former Wales striker Iwan Roberts told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast: “Mark McGuinness is a throwback if you ask me. He is an old-fashioned defender – he enjoys defending,” .
“I don’t think he’s great on the ball. His distribution isn’t brilliant – I think he’d admit that.
“But if you put the ball in his penalty box, he will go and win it, he will put his body on the line. That’s something you don’t see too much of in this day and age.
“£10m for a player who a couple of years ago went on loan to Sheffield Wednesday and didn’t look as if he had a future at the club – it’s good business for Cardiff and it will be a good move for Mark.”
