Luton are reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign Wigan Athletic’s top scorer Thelo Aasgaard, as Town look to bolster their bid to avoid consecutive relegations.

The 22-year-old Norwegian youth international has been in prolific form this season, netting 12 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions.

Premier League side Nottingham Forest and Championship outfit Stoke City have previously shown interest in Aasgaard, but according to reports, including from the Latics’ local newspaper, Wigan Today, Luton appears to be leading the race.

It has been suggested the transfer fee will exceed £3million with a release clause in Aasgaard’s Wigan contract thought to have been met.

Town, who have today re-signed defender Kal Naismith on loan from Bristol City, are currently languishing in the Championship relegation zone after Saturday’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Millwall, are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements having drawn a blank in their last three homes games.

Town have also been reportedly linked with three separate bids for Wycombe hotshot Richard Kone, and a potential swoop of Willen Geubbels of Swiss side St Gallen.

Like Kone, Aasgaard is one of the brightest talents in League One this season and Hatters will already know about him as the Norwegian youth international had two impressive performances against them, scoring a stunning volley in a 2023 FA Cup replay and netting a late Championship winner for Wigan at Kenilworth Road in September 2022.

Despite Wigan’s struggles this season, where they currently sit 16th in League One with just 26 goals in as many games, Aasgaard has been a standout performer, scoring nine of his 12 goals this season in the division. It has already surpassed his previous career-best tally of nine goals across all competitions last season.
