The leader of Luton Council has strongly criticised Conservative MP Robert Jenrick following his controversial claim that the UK had become “an island of strangers” in some areas, referencing Luton as an example.

Speaking in an interview with Politics.co.uk, after Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer said the nation “risked” such an outcome if migration remained unchecked, Mr Jenrick said there were towns in the country where “community cohesion” had already broken down, claiming “there are parts of the UK today where you are truly in a different world, a different place altogether”.

Luton was one of the areas he specifically mentioned, claiming that “46 per cent of residents arrived in the past decade” from outside the UK

Cllr Hazel Simmons, Leader of Luton Council, has now issued a firm rebuttal of Mr Jenrick’s claims, calling them “simply inaccurate” and defending the town’s diversity.

She said: “Robert Jenrick’s remarks are simply inaccurate. Over 60 per cent of Luton’s population were born in England (2021 ONS Census data).

“Luton is a proudly diverse town where people of all backgrounds contribute to our vibrant community. Migration has always been a key part of economic growth and community life in Luton and the contribution to our town of our diverse communities has been and continues to be immense. Our diversity is our strength. Far from being divided and segregated, our residents come together in celebration, unity, and shared purpose. This cohesion and cultural richness are what make Luton such a dynamic and welcoming place to live.”

The latest census figures show Luton’s population is made up of people from a wide range of backgrounds, with the majority born in England. The town has long been celebrated for its multicultural identity, with regular events, festivals and initiatives promoting integration and community pride, including the upcoming 49th annual Luton Carnival.
