Jordan Clark is set to miss “a number of weeks” after Luton Town revealed the midfielder suffered a broken jaw in their 2-2 draw with Notts County on Saturday.
The midfielder was carried from the pitch on a stretcher following a clash of heads during the first half of the League One encounter at Kenilworth Road.
Luton have now confirmed that Clark spent the weekend in hospital before undergoing surgery on Sunday to repair the damage.
Boss Jack Wilshere told the club’s website: “We all know how important Clicker is to this football club, and he will be a massive miss for the time he’s out.
“Whenever a player stays down in a situation like that, you always fear the worst. It was a completely accidental collision between two players fully committed to trying to score a goal and the other trying to keep it out.
“But he’s in the best hands possible to make his recovery as safe and quick as possible, as he was on the pitch, and we thank everyone involved.
“He’ll get all our love and support over the coming weeks and as we all know with Clicker, he will be fit and ready to make his 500th career appearance when he gets the green light to return.”
Clark will now begin a rehabilitation programme under the guidance of his surgeon, working alongside Luton’s medical, sport science and performance teams.
The club also thanked the medical staff from both Luton and Notts County who treated Clark on the pitch, as well as staff at Luton & Dunstable Hospital where he received further treatment.
The injury means Clark’s landmark 500th career appearance will have to wait, with the 31-year-old now facing a spell on the sidelines before he can return to action.
