Luton Town Supporters’ Trust has launched a fundraiser to help people affected by heart conditions after defender Tom Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest during the Premier League game against Bournemouth.

Fans of both clubs watched on in silence and concern as medics rushed to treat the Welshman at the Vitality Stadium before all breaking into an “oh Tommy, Tommy…” chant when he was stretchered off the pitch.

Lockyer has now been discharged from hospital after being fitted with an Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to prevent further further cardiac arrests.

Tests revealed that Saturday’s issue was different to the atrial fibrillation he suffered seven months ago during the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

His latest collapse saw the British Heart Foundation urge people to learn how to give CPR and use a defibrillator to help save lives.

Cherries fans have helped to raise cash for the charity and Luton Town Supporters’ Trust has launched a fundraiser ‘as a gesture of support

In a statement, the Hatters fans’ group said: ‘Tom Lockyer is a cherished member of the Luton Town family, and the shockwave of his cardiac arrest resonates not only within the football community but also touches the hearts of fans globally. In times of crisis, football transforms into more than just a game; it becomes a community, a family.

‘In response to this distressing incident, AFC Bournemouth podcasts, including “Back of the Net” and “UTCIAD,” took it upon themselves to dedicate proceeds from their videos to the British Heart Foundation.

‘The reaction from AFC Bournemouth fans during and after the incident will forever be etched in the memories of Luton supporters. Therefore, the Luton Town Supporters’ Trust has initiated this fundraiser as a gesture of support and gratitude towards AFC Bournemouth fans.

‘The fundraising campaign aims to channel the passion and camaraderie that define football into a force for good. Together, we can turn the adversity faced by Tom Lockyer into an opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of those affected by heart conditions.

‘Join us in this noble cause, where every donation becomes a symbol of solidarity, compassion, and love for the beautiful game. Whether you’re a die-hard Luton Town supporter, an AFC Bournemouth fan, or simply someone who believes in the power of unity, your contribution will make a difference.

‘As we rally around Tom Lockyer on his road to recovery, let us also stand united in support of the British Heart Foundation. Through our collective efforts, we can transform this challenging chapter into a story of triumph, resilience, and the unwavering strength of the football community.

‘Visit our fundraising page, spread the word, and let the world know that when it comes to matters of the heart, football fans are always ready to lend a helping hand. Together, we can make a lasting impact and demonstrate that the true heart of the game lies not only in the goals scored but in the lives touched and saved.’
