Luton and Dunstable University Hospital has warned of exceptionally high demand on its services after a sharp rise in admissions linked to respiratory illnesses including flu.

The hospital said the increase is affecting waiting times in its emergency department and may lead to restrictions on ward visiting in some areas.

Families planning to visit relatives are being asked to contact the ward in advance and to wear masks provided by the hospital. The Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said it is trying to protect patients while managing the seasonal spike in cases, which is expected to add further strain as winter pressures build.

Hospital leaders stressed that patients with planned appointments should continue to attend unless they are told otherwise. They also urged people to only use the emergency department for urgent and life threatening situations.

In a statement, the hospital said staff were working to make sure treatment is delivered safely despite the surge in demand. Patients with minor illnesses or injuries are being encouraged to use NHS 111 online, the NHS App, pharmacists or their GP for advice and treatment.
