Luton residents living in council housing can now access new electric vehicle charging points at five locations across the town, in a move aimed at helping people without driveways switch to electric cars.
The fast chargepoints have been installed at Vadis Close, The Moakes, The Crossways, The Green and Bailey Street, marking the first time Luton Council has introduced EV charging specifically to support residents living in its housing.
The project has been delivered in partnership with chargepoint operator Believ, which has fully funded the installations and will be responsible for their operation and ongoing maintenance.
Councillor Adrees Latif, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Development and Highways, said: “Access to convenient EV charging is an important part of supporting residents who want to make the switch to an electric vehicle, but who may not have their own driveway or off-street parking.
“These new chargepoints are the first we have installed specifically to support residents living in council housing, helping to make EV charging more accessible in locations where it is needed.
“This is part of our wider work to improve EV charging provision across Luton and support residents in making more sustainable travel choices. We will continue to look at opportunities to expand the charging network and make it easier for more people to make the transition to electric vehicles.”
The chargepoints are open to the public, although parking restrictions apply at The Green, Vadis Close, The Moakes and Bailey Street.
Guy Bartlett, chief executive of Believ, said: “By expanding the EV charging network in Luton, we’re helping more residents make the switch to electric vehicles.
“We’re pleased to continue working with Luton Council to provide reliable and convenient charging infrastructure, supporting the council’s wider sustainability ambitions and helping to reduce road transport emissions across the community.”
Further chargepoints are planned at four of the five locations, with the council also exploring additional sites across Luton.
Drivers can find details about using the chargepoints, including charging instructions and prices, through Believ’s website.
