Luton Town midfielder Zack Nelson has joined AFC Wimbledon on loan for the remainder of the season as the Hatters’ academy graduate looks to secure regular minutes.

The 20-year-old departs after making 26 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring twice in victories over Burton Albion and Exeter City in the Vertu Trophy. An England Under-20 international, Nelson has been a familiar presence around the first team since breaking through from the academy and now heads to south London with Wimbledon sitting 17th in League One.

Town boss Jack Wilshere had alluded to Nelson and Ethon Archer going on loan after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Lincoln, where they were not in the squad. Speaking of the former, he told the BBC: “Zack is a player that can really help us in the future. I think it’s important we prioritise his development now and give him what he needs, which maybe he can’t get right now, here.”

Nelson joined Luton from Tottenham as a 15-year-old and progressed through the academy before making his senior debut in the Premier League draw at Crystal Palace in March 2024. The move to the Cherry Red Records Stadium offers the midfielder a chance to build on that experience and play a key role during the run-in.

Speaking after completing the move, Nelson told the Dons’ website: “It’s a real privilege to be here, I can’t wait to take on this challenge. I can get goals and assists – I want to make things happen whenever I get a touch of the ball.”

Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson added: “Zack is a really exciting signing for us. He’s highly-rated at Luton Town and has played at both Championship and League One level for them. He’ll bring us energy, legs and real technical capabilities in midfield. He has that willingness to get into the opposing box, so hopefully he can add some more goals too.”

Wimbledon director of football Craig Cope said: “Zack is a really exciting young player with senior experience under his belt already. Having played fairly regularly for Luton, Zack is ready to go and will add quality to our midfield ranks. We look forward to seeing Zack in yellow and blue.”
