Twenty-three Luton schools have been singled out for national praise after receiving a letter from education secretary Bridget Phillipson recognising their outstanding outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.
The schools have been told they are among the very best in the country for narrowing the attainment gap, with the recognition reflecting what the council described as a sustained focus on improving life chances across the town’s education system.
In November, the Education Secretary also praised the early success of the government’s new breakfast club scheme in Luton.
Luton Council said the letter highlighted the dedication and expertise of school staff and the high expectations placed on pupils, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Councillor Javeria Hussain, the council’s portfolio holder for education and skills, said the recognition was a source of pride for the town.
“This recognition highlights the exceptional work happening across Luton’s schools,” she said. “The excellent achievement of disadvantaged pupils across the town stand as an example of what can be accomplished through dedication, high expectations and a deep commitment to our young people. I am incredibly proud of our schools, their staff and the difference they make each and every day.”
The council said it wants to build on the momentum created by the national recognition as part of its longer-term Luton 2040 vision, which aims to ensure every child in the town has the opportunity to thrive.
As a result of their strong performance, the schools are now being encouraged to support other schools and academy trusts across the region by sharing good practice and helping to spread their success more widely.
The schools recognised for excellent outcomes for disadvantaged pupils are Bramingham Primary, Chantry Primary, Denbigh Primary, Downside Primary, Farley Junior, Foxdell Primary, Hillborough Junior, Leagrave Primary, Parklea Primary, Putteridge Primary, River Bank Primary, Southfield Primary, St Margaret of Scotland Primary, Stopsley Community Primary, Tennyson Road Primary, Waulud Primary, William Austin Junior, Chiltern Academy, Challney High School for Boys, Challney High School for Girls, Denbigh High School, Icknield High School and Putteridge High School.
