Luton Town spent less on agents’ fees than the rest of their Championship rivals and even lower than three clubs in League One, according to figures released by the FA.

The Hatters spent £298,140 in fees to agents between February 1, 2019 and January 31, 2020, up from £124,069 the previous year.

Town were promoted to the Championship last summer, and then shelled out a club record fee for goalkeeper Simon Sluga (€1.5m), while also signing Callum McManaman, Martin Cranie, Ryan Tunnicliffe, Brendan Galloway, Jacob Butterfield, Donervon Daniels and Peter Kioso.

They also re-signed Kazenga LuaLua and secured loan deals for Izzy Brown (Chelsea), Luke Bolton (Manchester City), James Bree (Aston Villa) and Cameron Carter-Vickers (Tottenham Hotspur).

While Luton prop up the Championship table as well as the table for shelling out cash to agents, Stoke City, who had Hatters boss Nathan Jones as manager from January until November last year, handed over £5,683,904 to agents.

Despite Luton more than doubling their expenditure to agents from the previous year, their spending is dwarfed by League One Sunderland who splashed out £1,346,373, while Coventry City (£353,632) and Ipswich Town (£325,262) also spent more.

In total, Championship clubs spent £49,299,123, which is over £200m less than the Premier League (£263,368,860), where Champions elect Liverpool spent £30,308,791.
