Jerry Yates’ difficult spell at Kenilworth Road could be nearing an early end, with the Luton Town striker and another Hatter emerging as surprise loan targets for Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday during the current transfer window.
The 29-year-old arrived in Bedfordshire at the 11th hour in the August window for a reported fee of seven figure fee, though officially undisclosed, and he was unveiled like a marquee signing moments before Town kicked off their League One campaign with a victory over AFC Wimbledon.
He arrived having finished term as Derby County’s top scorer last term, with 10 goals, but though he’s scored seven goals in all competitions for Luton, four have come in the Vertu Trophy.
Recently, Yates has found appearances hard to come by in League One under current boss Jack Wilshere and he was absent for Tuesday’s embarrassing 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield, where the manager instead played midfielder Jordan Clark in a false nine role.
According to a report from BBC Sheffield, a deal is being explored, with the broadcaster stating: “Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to complete the signing of Luton Town striker Jerry Yates before the weekend. The Owls, who need EFL approval for any signing made while they remain in administration, would be adding the 29-year-old on loan. Yates, who only joined the Hatters last August for a reported seven-figure fee, will be looking to bolster Wednesday’s attack, with the club failing to score a goal in their past seven games.”
Luton midfielder Marvelous Nakamba is reportedly another player on Sheffield Wednesday’s radar amid their struggles in the Championship, with reports suggestting Wednesday are eyeing a possible loan move for the Zimbabwe international.
Nakamba has only featured in four Vertu Trophy games for Luton this season and has played more times for his country, having just come back from the Africa Cup on Nations.
Wednesday are a club in deep trouble both on and off the pitch. The Owls have failed to score in their last seven matches and are staring relegation in the face after being docked 18 points for entering administration, along with further regulatory breaches.
Whether either moves materialises remains to be seen, but with Nakamba and Yates now on the fringes at Luton, temporary exits may suit all parties.
