Luton have signed Thelo Aasgaard from Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee with the new man saying he is ready to hit the ground running by scoring and creating goals for the Hatters.

Town have drawn a blank in each of their last three home games, while thee Norway under-21 international midfielder is the leading goalscorer for the League One Latics, where he netted 12 goals in 31 appearances.

The transfer was widely reported today, with some outlets suggesting a £3million fee for the 22-year-old. Aasgaard was then absent from Wigan’s team sheet for their 1-0 defeat at Peterborough.

Hopes were raised further this evening when a fan photo of the new recruit in a Hatters tracksuit was taken in a Tesco and posted on social media. And, as a cheeky nod to the photo leak, the Hatters teased the announcement of the transfer on their X account with the caption ‘Late night shopping, anyone?’.

A product of Liverpool’s academy, Aasgaard moved to Wigan in 2016, where he rose through the ranks and made 163 senior appearances, scoring 30 goals. He said the decision to leave his long-time club was not taken lightly. However, the opportunity at Kenilworth Road proved too enticing.

“It’s been a joy to watch this club grow over the past few years, so I can’t wait to be a part of it now,” said Aasgaard told LTFC+. “I’ve been at Wigan from a young age, and I’ve had a lot of good memories there, so the next move had to be right, had to be special, and I feel this is the right place to be.”

Aasgaard scored twice against Town in the 2022/23 season and believes he can contribute both creatively and with goals for the Hatters. “I’m going to try to add goals from midfield, provide that creative spark, and bring my team-mates into the play,” he added.

The midfielder is eager to get started, having played a key role for Wigan this season, saying: “I’ve been playing pretty much every minute of every game at Wigan, so I’m ready to go. I’m physically good and can’t wait to get started.”

Manager Matt Bloomfield described Aasgaard as a technically gifted player with the ability to create and score goals, saying: “Thelo can play as a 10, but he can also play as an eight or on the left. He’s adept at a variety of positions.”

Aasgaard becomes Luton’s second signing of the day, after Kal Naismith rejoined the club on loan from Bristol City until the end of the season, having left for the Robins in 2022 after winning the Hatters player of the season award.

Town have also been linked with three separate bids, now at a reported £6million from Wycombe striker Richard Kone, who tonight bagged a both goals including a late injury-time penalty winner to beat Barnsley and keep the Chairboys on track for promotion from League One.

Interim Wanderers boss Sam Grace told BBC after the match: “Richard wants to get promoted with Wycombe, and I don’t think anyone can be in any doubts, having seen that performance tonight, that he’s not completely committed.”
