Luton Town have been handed a Monday night Championship curtain-raiser at home to Burnley on August 12 (8pm) with Sky Sports selecting the clash for the slot as part of the new domestic TV deal that will see all opening weekend Football League fixtures televised.
Within seven days of today’s EFL fixture release, all matches selected for broadcast for the period to the end of September will be announced, and before a ball is kicked of the 2024/25 season, all TV selections will be confirmed for the period up to the FA Cup third round in early January. This will give fans up to five months’ notice, as opposed to the previous five weeks.
Luton and Burnley got relegated from the top flight last term and are among the favourites for an immediate return and though Clarets boss Vincent Kompany has left to take charge of Bayern Munich, and his successor yet to be named, it is one of the toughest starts possible for Rob Edwards’ Hatters.
After that, Town’s opening month back in the second tier will include trips to Portsmouth and Preston North End (August 14 and 24 respectively) and then Queens Park Rangers at home (August 31).
But Luton fans eyes would have immediately searched for the derby day fixtures against Watford and they will be at home on October 19 and away on February 22.
But with relegation comes eight more games than in the Premier League and that means more midweek matches, with Town facing some big journeys to Sunderland (February 12), Stoke (April 8), Cardiff (March 11), and Leeds (November 26), with Oxford (January 21) the other midweek fixture so far.
And journey times don’t get much shorter over Christmas either with a Boxing Day away trip to Bristol City and a trek to Swansea on December 29, thought it will be a home match against Norwich on New Year’s Day.
With hopes high of a promotion chase this term, Town will finish their home campaign against Coventry City on April 26 and the final game of the season at West Bromwich Albion on May 3.
