A special memorial event to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings will be held this Thursday (June 6) outside Luton Town Hall.
The event will begin at 7.45pm and will culminate with the lighting of a beacon at 9.15pm, signifying the support of the people of Luton and saying ‘thank you’ to all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. The public are welcome to attend.
There will be live performances from organisations attending the event including: The Salvation Army Band and Luton choir, The Cantores.
Around the world servicemen and women of all faiths and nationalities have bravely placed themselves in situations we would dare not think about.
Robin Porter, Chief Executive of Luton Council, said: “This special memorial event gives us all the chance to remember the servicemen and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today.
“We would like to welcome all veterans who have fought for this country to join us at the event, so we can honour, together, the dead and those who continue to serve.
“Let us take a moment to honour their sacrifice; while conflicts still rage around the world we all hope for peace for the many who live their lives in a warzone.”
It is 80 years since the D-Day landings and Luton’s event is one of many taking place across the country.
It involved 155,000 troops supported by 11,500 aircraft and 6,900 naval vessels in an assault on five Normandy beaches. D-Day altered the course of history, signalling the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany.
