Luton Town Supporters’ Trust has praised fans for helping to raise £5,000 for the Marvelous Nakamba Foundation as a thank-you for the midfielder’s part in firing the Hatters to the Premier League.
The Zimbabwean international joined on loan from Aston Villa in January and quickly became a fan favourite and though he’s now returned to his parent club, he did offer hope that he could be a Town player again.
At the victory day parade in St George’s Square to celebrate promotion to the top flight after 31 years, he was asked onstage if he’ll be returning and the Zimbabwean international told the estimated 20,000 fans lining the streets “I think, hopefully”.
That possibility was strengthened this week when The Athletic reported that Villa manager Unai Emery has no plans to reintegrate players that were out on loan this season.
Regardless of where Nakamba plays his football next term, his contribution to Luton will never be forgotten, while his community work was also highlighted in an exclusive Luton Town Supporters’ Trust podcast.
The Marvelous Nakamba Foundation aims to support underprivileged children and youth in Zimbabwe, with education, sport, projects, life experiences and skills and has already helped more than 10,000 young people get a better start in life.
The Trust set up a Go Fund Me page to support the work of the midfielder and his foundation, and hit their total of £5,000 within two weeks, having kicked off the donations with £500. The funding page will also remain open for people to continue to donate.
Luton Town Supporters’ Trust spokesperson Kevin Harper said: “It was obvious almost immediately that Marvelous Nakamba was an excellent footballer and when he was a guest on the Luton Town Supporters’ Trust podcast it became clear how special a person he is too.
“When he posted on social media that his summer was going to involve continuing the great work his foundation does back home, as the leading supporters’ organisation we wanted to give fans the opportunity to show him our thanks for the huge part he played in getting Luton to the Premier League, and support him in his efforts to help those in Zimbabwe who need the support.
“We are delighted to have hit our target of £5,000 in little more than a week and look forward to handing that on to a very worthy cause and seeing the money raised help make a real difference.”
