Luton are assessing the fitness of new loan midfielder Marvelous Nakamba and defender Dan Potts ahead of tomorrow’s Championship clash at home to Stoke City.
Town swooped to sign the Aston Villa ace on transfer deadline day, which boss Rob Edwards hailed as a “real coup”.
The Zimbabwean international cost Villa £11million when the Premier League outfit signed him from Club Brugge, where he featured in the Champions League.
But he’s not played for them this term and asked if he’s fit enough to face Stoke, assistant boss Paul Trollope said: “We’re assessing that. He’s had his first session with the players. The players who played on Tuesday night had a very light one so we will be assessing that after today (Thursday) to see how he reacts to the training session.
“He worked really hard this morning, had a good session completed with the ones that didn’t play and some younger players so we’re pleased with his contribution this morning and that will certainly be assessed as to whether he is available and ready enough for Saturday.
“He is obviously a good level player, Premier League experience, you can see he’s fitted straight into the group. He’s a really good character which I think fits in with the group very well.
“It’s pretty obvious to see his game time over the last year, 18 months, was not what he wanted to be so we’re going to have to manage him well but we’ve brought him here to add to that midfield unit.”
Fans’ hopes of adding to their club’s defensive ranks on transfer deadline day didn’t materialise, despite reports of interest in Nottingham Forest’s Steve Cook.
Those wishes were heightened when Potts was omitted from Tuesday’s squad for the 1-0 win over Cardiff, which sent Town fourth in the league.
Talking of the transfer speculation, Trollope said: “I’m not going to sit here and talk about players that didn’t come but we’re happy. The window is shut, we’re happy with the squad, we’re happy with the progress we have made since we’ve been in and we believe in the players that are here.”
Asked about Potts’ availability for the weekend, the assistant boss said: “It’s being assessed. He tweaked his knee in a training session on Friday. We don’t believe it’s too bad but it’s being assessed over the next couple of days with regard to the weekend.”
But there was welcome news for the return of fans’ favourite Henri Lansbury, who has been out of action since departing early in the 1-1 draw with Sunderland at the end of October.
“He’s back to full training,” Trollope confirmed, adding: “He was integrated into part training last week and he’s shown his experience and quality since he’s been back.
“He’s trained for two or three days so that’s been a positive. Now, it’s a case of progressing his work, topping up his fitness and hopefully we’ll see him in action before too long.”
