Luton working on ‘one or two’ transfers but Edwards tight-lipped on Swedish swoop

Luton boss Rob Edwards is aiming to add “one or two” new players before the transfer window shuts tomorrow night but would not be drawn on speculation that Spanish midfielder Lamine Fanne is in the country for a medical today.

Reports from Sweden, where the 20-year-old plays for Stockholm side AIK, have claimed that a £4million deal has been agreed, but that he’ll play out the remainder of the Allsvenskan season, which ends in November, and join Town in January.

Town have also been linked with moves for Norwich City winger Abu Kamara and Leicester City striker Tom Cannon, but Edwards was keeping his cards close to his chest today when asked specifically about the Swedish reports of a done deal for Fanne.

“We’re working on things as we stand at the moment. I don’t want to talk about any individuals, but as I say we’re working hard to try and do one or two more bits of business,” said the Town chief.

“If we do that, it might affect one or two little things, smaller things with the rest of the group. The guys are working really hard in the offices on one or two bits.”

But having seen Ipswich sign Chiedozie Ogbene for £8million yesterday, Edwards says a plan has been in place fill the role vacated by the Republic of Ireland international.

“There’s always plans in place and we’ve had that for every eventuality and people that we thought we could be tested on.

“There’s lots of plans in place and we’ve tried to be as proactive as possible with our recruitment. But I think I’ve said in the last few weeks, it’s been a big challenge this year. It’s been very strange as well on getting people in.

“Again, there’s so many factors and reasons for that but over this last week it’s gone nuts across the board and things have really started picking up.

“We’re working very hard on one or two as we speak. But, look, if they don’t happen then I’m really content and happy with where we’re at. I think we’ve got a really strong group.”

And the manager is hopeful that Luton won’t lose any more key players, claiming this lunch time that “no live offers” had been made for his Hatters, despite strong speculation about a move to Torino for Teden Mengi and links to a Leicester City swoop for keeper Thomas Kaminski.

With Luton playing QPR tomorrow night at Kenilworth Road on transfer deadline day Edwards joked: “I won’t have my phone on me. Can you imagine that?

“That’s over to the boss. Gary (Sweet – CEO) will sort all that sort of stuff, and the recruitment team. I’ll try to concentrate on the job in hand at that moment.”

He added: “It’s not ideal having a game on the day the window is shutting, especially when you are trying to do bits, but we’ll try as much as possible to get things done before hand.”
