Luton’s health, leisure and library services have been given a major boost with a new £13.1 million funding deal announced between Luton Rising and Active Luton, securing vital support through to 2030.

The agreement, revealed as Active Luton celebrates its 20th anniversary, marks a significant continuation of the long-standing partnership between the charity and Luton Rising — the Luton Council-owned company behind London Luton Airport.

The funding will help Active Luton deliver inclusive and accessible services across the town, including physical activity programmes, wellbeing support, and opportunities for learning and career development.

Lawrence Kay, CEO of Active Luton, welcomed the renewed backing, saying: “We are incredibly grateful for our enduring partnership with Luton Rising. Its support has played a vital role in our journey from the very beginning, and has been instrumental in our growth and reach within the community. Luton Rising’s continued support enables us to deliver meaningful impact across the town, helping us to improve health, wellbeing, and opportunity for people across Luton.”

Luton Rising has invested over £190 million in the town’s voluntary, community and charity sector since 1998. Recent analysis by independent consultants Volterra found that every £1 invested in Active Luton generates a social return of more than £7.40 — equating to around £44 million in community benefits in 2023/24 alone.

Cllr Javeria Hussain, Deputy Chair of Luton Rising, said the new deal reflects a strong commitment to the people of Luton.

“This new agreement reflects a shared commitment to making a positive long-term difference to the lives of Luton’s residents. The continuity provided by our renewed commitment supports our joint ambitions to keep improving lives through health, wellbeing, and learning,” she said.

Active Luton was founded in 2005 and has since become a key player in delivering sports, leisure and wellbeing services in the town, including running local leisure centres, swimming pools, and library services.

The new funding will allow the organisation to plan long-term improvements, enhance facilities and reach even more residents over the next five years.
