A Luton singer-songwriter has released his debut single, reflecting on grief and the struggle to move forward after loss, hoping it can help listeners like it did him.
The Looted Youth, the musical project of Ben Thomson, has unveiled ‘Maybe That’s Just Life?’, following his Christmas Day released demo ‘Win The Day’, which earned BBC Introducing radio play shortly after it was recorded.
Staying true to the DIY approach that first helped his music find an audience, Thomson’s songs lean on a stripped-back sound built around guitar and voice, exploring themes of personal change, reflection and everyday struggles.
The track, out now on hometown label Vandalism Begins at Home Records, takes that introspective approach further, focusing on the emotional aftermath of losing someone close.
Thomson said: “This song is about reflecting on losing a loved one, not being able to say goodbye and the struggles of carrying on afterwards.
“Recording this song has helped me a lot, and I hope it does the same for anyone who can relate to the lyrics.”
The song carries a deliberately raw and lo-fi feel, with Thomson’s vulnerable vocal sitting front and centre against sparse instrumentation, creating what he describes as a snapshot of a moment in time.
The release continues a growing period of activity for the Luton artist, who has been writing and performing intermittently for several years.
Thomson is already working on new material and further songs are expected to appear throughout the year.
