Luton Town defender Christ Makosso has been slapped with a three-match suspension after admitting a Football Association charge of violent conduct during Saturday’s 2-0 League One win at Peterborough.

The Congolese centre-back was charged following a 76th-minute incident that went unnoticed by the match officials at the Weston Homes Stadium but was caught on camera.

The images showed the defender in the Posh penalty area for a set piece, closely marshalled by United’s Carl Johnstone and then striking at his opponent’s face as the ball was delivered into the box, leaving the right back lying on the ground.

As a result, Makosso will miss tonight’s Carabao Cup first round tie at Coventry, as well as the upcoming league matches against Bradford City and Wigan Athletic.

With Mark McGuinness expected to play against the Sky Blues tonight, it was unlikely that Makosso was in line for an appearance in the League Cup clash tonight, but boss Matt Bloomfield has talked about players needing to take their chances and said after the Peterborough win: “If you earn the shirt and deserve to keep it, there has to be that element to us.”

The Hatters are still to concede this season, so a continuation of their clean sheet record may see Makosso kept out of the side beyond his ban.
