Luton set-piece coach and former player Alan McCormack has left the Hatters to become the first team coach at Leyton Orient after three seasons in the Kenilworth Road backroom staff.
The 40-year-old played for Orient in 2003 but joined Town in 2017, making the switch from Brentford and helping them to win back-to-back promotions as a player. The midfielder left Luton to join Northampton but returned in 2021 after hanging up his boots.
The Irishman initially coached in the academy set-up, first with the Under-13s and then guiding the Under-18s to the EFL Youth Alliance South-East Division and Merit Youth League 1 title successes in 2022/23.
First team manager Rob Edwards made McCormack his set piece coach at the start of last season, but he has now taken up a role under O’s boss Richie Wellens, replacing Matt Harrold who has joined AFC Bournemouth.
A statement from the Hatters said: “Everyone associated with Luton Town would like to thank Macca for his service on and off the pitch for the Hatters and wish him the very best of luck with Orient.”
Orient Director of Football Martin Ling, told the O’s website: “We’ve spent a lot of time this summer making sure we had the right replacement for Matt Harrold and, for us, Alan fits that mould excellently. His experience as a player and the success he achieved in his time at Luton Town’s academy made him the obvious candidate for us. We’re really excited to see what Alan can bring to our coaching staff, as we approach pre-season for the 2024/25 season.”
Wellens added: “As soon as we first met with Alan, we knew that he was the man we wanted to join our coaching staff. Alan’s passion for our project, coupled with his experience as both a player and coach made him the standout person for the job. As coaching staff, we have great relationships together and we are confident that Alan will fit seamlessly into the culture here at Leyton Orient.”
