Mark McGuinness says Luton must analyse last season’s relegation but use it as motivation to prepare for what he expects will be a demanding League One campaign.

As Town continue their pre-season preparations this week, the defender, who was part of the side that lost 5-3 at West Bromwich Albion to go down on the final day of the Championship season, stressed the importance of reflection but was quick to shift focus to the challenges ahead.

“It’s important, with what happened, to debrief that and look over that,” he told the club’s website, adding: “But we’re really looking forward to cracking on this season, to be honest.

“We’re straight to work doing bits and bobs, shape work and we’re already getting back to work. I think it’s important to realise what happened, analyse what happened, but really get excited towards next season now.”

McGuinness, who joined Luton last summer from Cardiff, who were also relegated, emphasised the need to build a strong squad dynamic during these early weeks.

“It’s important we get the boys in now, build a squad and really get that camaraderie together because it’s going to be important going into what is going to be a tough season, there’s no doubt about that,” he said.

“I think it’s important that it’s one that we should be looking forward to. There’s excitement around the place and it’s vitally important that we get working together, we get cracking and we get working straight away.”
