Luton’s Teden Mengi has been called up by England Under-21s after Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton withdrew on medical advice from Ben Futcher’s squad for their Euro 2025 qualifiers against Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

The 22-year-old defender made his U21 debut in the 7-0 win over Luxembourg in Bolton earlier this year, and could be in line to earn his second against tomorrow (Friday) an imperious Ukraine side that sits top of their qualification group with a perfect eight-game record.

Mengi will also be in the squad for Tuesday’s clash against Azerbaijan at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate stadium.

Futcher’s side beat Austria 4-1 in a friendly at Luton’s Kenilworth Road stadium last month but go into this qualification double-header five points behind group F leaders Ukraine with two games to play.

The Hatters also have Zack Nelson and Joe Johnson on England youth duty at U20 and U19 level, respectively, but Reuell Walters has withdrawn from the U20 squad to play Italy and Czechia.

Elsewhere, defender Mark McGuinness has earned his first call-up to the senior Republic of Ireland squad, and midfielder Marvelous Nakamba joined up with Zimbabwe for their African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
