Mick Harford, the man who guided Luton into the Championship believes momentum can play a big part in the club’s return to the second flight after 12 years away.
The Hatters legend relinquished the manager’s hotseat once he’d secured the club’s second successive promotion, having taken over temporarily when Nathan Jones left for Stoke in January.
Harford made way for new manager Graeme Jones this summer and has returned to his previous role as Luton’s chief recruitment officer, but he represented the club at the EFL season launch at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground on Tuesday.
He said: “The place is buzzing, the town is buzzing, the club is buzzing and we’re looking to hopefully carry on the momentum of back-to-back promotions and try and get ourselves cemented in the Championship.
“My belief is that we have a real good set of players who’ve come through two leagues. They’ve stuck together, they’ve got a real good spirit and I’m absolutely certain that we’ll be competitive in every single game. We’ll be at it and hopefully see where it takes us.
“Momentum is a massive thing in terms of getting promotion (from League One), being champions, having that tag, going into a new league. We belief that we’ve added well to the squad in terms of recruitment.
“So, everyone is set, everyone’s ready to go and looking forward to a massive game against Middlesbrough on Friday evening at a packed Kenilworth Road, it’ll be an amazing atmosphere.”
Town will kick-off the Championship season tonight in front of the Sky Television cameras and Harford added: “It’s brilliant, especially for the fans, who have been really supportive down the years, especially for the players, especially for everyone connected with the football club. It’s a massive, massive achievement where we’ve got to in such a short space of time.
