Joe Morrell says he’s left his Luton future in the hands of his representatives after a “frustrating season”, admitting he just wants to play next season, whatever the level.
The midfielder is looking ahead to the European Championships with Wales after he and Hatters team-mate Tom Lockyer were selected for the international tournament, which start in 10 days.
Morrell was signed from Bristol City for £200,000 in October, but he played more for his national side than he did for Town, with boss Nathan Jones admitting he had to improve his defensive game.
The 24-year-old made just six starts for Luton, and was on the pitch for a total of 538 minutes, while for Wales he’s played 677 minutes.
Asked during a Wales press conference if his club situation is something he’s addressing, Morrell said: “Yeah, 100 per cent. It’s already something that’s hopefully underway, addressing next season, because I’ve always said I’m a footballer who enjoys playing football and not a footballer who enjoys being a footballer – I think there is a difference.
“It’s just about playing regularly regardless of the level. It’s something that I’ve put out of my mind and left with representatives and people for the summer.
“I’m focusing on the Euros and I know it sounds boring but whatever happens, happens. Next season I need to be playing regular football and that’s something I’ll be addressing, for sure.”
Morrell’s last Luton outing came on February 27 when he was given the hook at half-time with Town 2-0 down at home to Sheffield Wednesday. The Hatters went on to a memorable second half comeback to win 3-2 and the midfielder didn’t feature again.
“It’s definitely been a frustrating season for me. For one reason or another, it didn’t really go to plan,” said the midfielder.
“The chance to play some football in the Championship was what I wanted. I didn’t necessarily get that, for whatever reason. So, it has been a frustrating season, but I feel fit and I do feel ready (for the Euros).”
