Myles Smith has been picked to support global superstar Ed Sheeran on his European tour next year, admitting it was the hitmaker that inspired him to start songwriting.
The Lutonian has had a huge breakthrough year, from releasing his debut EP, ‘You Promised a Lifetime’ to playing the Radio 1 Big Weekend in his hometown, Glastonbury and releasing the mega-hit ‘Stargazing’ which kept him in the UK charts top 10 for over 10 weeks and has amassed huge steaming numbers. Yesterday, it also rose to number one on the US alternative radio chart.
His popularity has led to sold-out tours across the world and now he’ll share the stage with one of his heroes, Sheeran, on the European leg of his Mathematics Tour.
Smith wrote on Instagram: “I was never good at maths, but hopefully @teddysphotos can teach me on TOURRR! (+ x ÷ -). I genuinely am OVERWHELMED, EXCITED, BUZZING and truly thankful to be opening up for one of my heroes.”
“It’s mad to think that my entire life as a songwriter started with being inspired by Ed, and now we’re here?!”
Smith, who came to prominence with viral covers on social media, also posted a video of him covering Sheeran’s hit ‘Lego House,’ which he recorded as a teenager.
Sheeran’s album ‘Plus’ inspired Smith to get a loop pedal for his 13th birthday and the Lutonian posted a photo of that, plus another of a guitar and Sheeran’s ‘Multiply’ album that he got for his 16th birthday.
Smith also posted a friend’s text message from 2016, in which his pal penned, “My bro, trust me when I say this. A few years from now. You’re gonna be the Black Ed Sheeran.”
But before Smith joins Sheeran as one of his opening acts next May, he’s currently on a sold-out North American tour.
