Luton Town have confirmed that Marvelous Nakamba has left the club with immediate effect after a mutual agreement was reached to terminate the Zimbabwe international’s contract. He is expected to join Championship club Sheffield Wednesday

Nakamba will forever hold a special place in Hatters folklore following his role in the club’s remarkable rise to the Premier League. He first arrived at Kenilworth Road on loan from Aston Villa during the January transfer window of the 2022/23 season and went on to make 20 appearances as Luton sealed promotion via the play-offs, memorably scoring his penalty in the Wembley shoot-out win over Coventry City.

That impact led to a permanent return later that summer, with the midfielder rejoining on a three-year deal after a pre-season training camp in Slovenia that was marked by his familiar smile back among the squad.

Nakamba started the 2023/24 campaign strongly, making 14 appearances, but his season was cut short by a knee injury sustained while on World Cup qualifying duty with Zimbabwe. He returned to action last term with 23 appearances and featured four times this season, bringing his total in a Luton shirt to 61 outings.

Speaking on behalf of the board, chief executive Gary Sweet paid tribute to Nakamba’s influence both on and off the pitch.

“Marvelous has been a huge part of our success, a special character who came to add real quality at the time we needed it to help us to promotion,” he said.

“He has been a pleasure to have around the Club, always smiling, even through some tough times personally with injury.

“Everyone at Luton Town thanks Marv for his contribution in his three years at Kenilworth Road, he will always be a welcome visitor, and we wish him every success for his future career.”

Nakamba departs with his legacy secure as one of the defining figures of Luton’s modern era, remembered not just for his performances but for the moment that sent a club and its supporters into Premier League history.
