A new era will begin for the town’s shopping centre today (July 22) as The Mall changes its name to become Luton Point.

The name was selected to represent the retail hub’s unique positioning at the heart of the town, reflecting its place as a meeting point within the community.

The shopping hotspot, which opened in 1972 was originally called the Arndale Centre until 2006 when Capital & Regional bought it and changed the name to The Mall. But after being embroiled in a four-year planning battle with Luton Town FC up until early 2020, over the Hatters’ plans to finance their new Power Court stadium with shopping and leisure facilities at Newslands Park, C&R last year sold The Mall for £58million to former Newcastle United Football Club owner Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group.

Today, the Luton Point name, logo and branding will be seen across the shopping centre, while their website will launch at lutonpoint.co.uk, which includes a new translation tool, with the option to switch to the top three languages (after English) spoken in Luton: Urdu, Polish and Romanian.

“We are looking forward to officially becoming Luton Point,” said Roy Greening, the centre director, adding: “The shopping centre has been at the heart of the town since 1972 and while we may have a new name, our customers can expect to receive the same friendly welcome, fantastic line up of stores and community-led events that they have come to know and love.”
